Trance Essence, based in California, is a fragrance line by Janna Sheehan. (You can read an interview between her & Marlen Harrison at Perfume Critic.) At the moment, there are six fragrances available, and they are all really good!!
Chen Xi is described as smelling like a “Chinese mandarin garden at dawn” on the Trance Essence website – and I can definitely see that. It’s a light and fresh scent, with a definite Asian feel to it. On my skin, the mandarin note isn’t very strong – it seems as though all the notes blend so well that you can’t really pick anything in particular. You definitely get the fresh feeling from the citrus and mint notes, and the ginger gives it an added spice, giving Chen Xi a different feel to a lot of fragrances on the market.
What I found quite interesting is that Chen Xi was quite soft for the first half an hour on my skin. After that, it seemed to get stronger, and stayed so for an hour or more. I don’t know if that’s just on me, or if it’s something someone else has experienced. (I’d love to hear if it’s like that for anybody else!) Either way, I thought it was really interesting, because at first I thought that the fragrance wouldn’t last very long if it began so soft on my skin!
As with the other scents in the Trance Essence line, you can purchase Chen Xi as either a 3.5ml perfume oil ($46 US at Beauty Habit) or a 60ml eau de parfum $98 US at Beauty Habit). I would love to buy myself a full sized bottle of Chen Xi – maybe the perfume oil, as that’s the concentration of the sample I own.
